problems with burners and dvd play after sp2

I hope someone here can help. I have talked to 5 Microsoft techs that cant
fix my problem. I have a dell 8250, xp home, 2.4gig pent 4, 512 ram, 200 gigs
of hard drive. burning programs are Nero 6, sonic my dvd, or pinnacle.
Pre sp2 I burned a lot, dvds movies etc. After sp2 I can no longer burn or
even watch dvds anymore. I get reset errors in both my dvd player and the
burner. I spoke to a Microsoft tech and was told to remove sp2 and see what
happens, same problems, deleted drivers and let them reinstall, same problem.
Had me check some registry settings and all 3 were correct. I went as far as
buying a new burner, removing all the software and reinstalling. Replaced the
cables to the motherboard. Nothing works. I took the original burner to a
friends house and it works fine. I had NO problems with my machine before sp2
install. Any ideas ANYONE???? PLEASE???

Connect your CD-R/W drive as slave to the same IDE cable as your hard drive
and see if that works. If it works on the Primary controller but not on the
Secondary controller you might have a bad Secondary controller on the
motherboard. That's bad news as you will need to replace the board.

Here are some other ideas that I would try

1) check to ensure you have DMA enabled for your controller. See here if you
don't know what I mean http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/Enable_DMA.htm

2) ensure that you have disabled XP's built in recording software whenever
you use third party burning software. From My Computer windows right click
the burner icon and select Properties->Recording Tab.

3) If the motherboard uses an intel chipset then you should try installing
the "intel accelerator" from www.intel.com

if the above don't work then:

1) download and try the fix from Alex Nichol's site although I suspect that
at least one of the 5 techs at MS would have tried this one
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm (look in the Problems section)

2) try a clean install of XP on a repartitioned and reformatted drive. See
if you can burn with only XP's native software. It will not burn to DVD
though but see if you can at least burn to CD-R/W with it. If not then
install one piece of burning software (remember to disable XP's burning
software first)
