Problems with a FrontPage Website after a Google sitemap was gener

Hi:

For some reason when a Google sitemap was generated for my site, it began
substituting %5C for some of the forward slashes in the URL. For example it
created
http://www.thereareplaces.com/Guidebook\pdest/Asia/chhkpts.htm

From

http://www.thereareplaces.com/Guidebook/pdest/Asia/chhkpts.htm

The problem is that the url with the %5C instead of the / brings up the
page, but with many (but not all of the images) missing. If you change the
%5C to a / - all of the images display as they were designed. No url in the
site has a %5C in it, in the form in which it was originally created. It is
only in the sitemap (which of course, google has now used and the urls
discovered during a google search, result in 404 errors and pictures not
displaying when people access the site using these urs.

Software at my ISP generated the Google sitemap and I have spoken to them on
the problem but they keep telling me that the url should work either way. I
have shown them that it does not and now they are confounded.

Me too, as some images show on the page and some don't. This is a big
problem for us since our site (www.thereareplaces.com) is a travel site that
relies on pictures and maps to support our articles.

Does anyone have any ideas how the %5C might have been generated in the URLS
and why some images do not show when you include the $5C instead of a / in
the url sting.

Have you contacted the author of the Google Sitemap Generator software or tried a different
application?

I do not know a lot about sitemap generation software, but thought that the
app to generate it must be installed on the server and since it is a hosted
service, we do not have the authority to load this type of software on the
system (or at least that is what we now understand).


The site is on a shared server and the ISP maintains the software. They
claim that the saftware they use is the app provided by Google, but they
agreed to check with their developers on this issue.

One action we took was to republish the entire site and generate a new
sitemap, but it still had the same errors. So, we did a global replace of the
%5C with a /. Hopefully that will work, but until the sitemap is ingested
the errors and unsatisfactory user experience will continue.

Our real concern is in understanding where the %5C came from and why it
influences only some of the images on the page (although the images it
influences are the critical ones).
