Problems transferring iTunes library from Mac to XP

I have tried to copy my iTunes library from my Mac to my XP machine by
copying the files from the Mac on to an external hard drive and then
dragging and dropping them on to the LIbrary icon in iTunes on the XP
machine. All the files appear in the library however when I try to play any
of them they are very broken. Is this an anti-copy protection mechanism
that Apple have put in or have I got a setting wrong on the XP machine?

You might have a problem with tracks purchased from the iTMS, but all others
should play OK. There are some "how-to" articles on transferring libraries at
