Problems Syncing iPod to XP

I have a 40 GB (third generation) iPod and a PC upgraded from Windows
2000 to XP. I'm connecting via firewire, using a card that I installed
myself. It worked fine with 2000, but since I upgraded, I've had
frequent problems syncing. I'll put the iPod in the cradle and iTunes
will open, but then freeze up. If I run the iPod disk repair, it works
fine, but then a few days later it starts freezing again, when all
I've done in the meantime is listen to music.

My iPod, XP, and iTunes all have the latest software. I've tried
wiping the ipod and restoring the software, but that doesn't seem to
help.

Any thoughts?
