Problems since updates

Since downloading the latest updates (last weekend) my printer is only
printing in colour. The black cartridge doesn't print at all. The cartridge
goes through all the motions of sliding back and forth but no text is printed
at all. I was advised to delete the updates which I did, that didn't work.
So I tried system restore only to find that that no longer works either. I
have XP Pro. I have tried changing the ink cartridge. I have been advised
to go to the Microsoft website for a patch (when I got that advice I didn't
know that my system restore wasn't working) but I cant find the section that
I need.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
P.s. I'm not a technical person and I dont understand a lot of technical
language

Doubtful a Microsoft Update caused the printer issue - Unless you got
a driver update which appears only as an optional update.
Likely the printer heads need cleaning. Ink can congeal over time and
cause a clog. Open Printers applet in Control Panel (Classic View).
Right Click your printer's icon, then left click Properties. Once the
details
box opens you should see an Advanced or Maintenance (TAB). From
one of these two tabs you should find the Cleaning options. Most have
a pattern print test page to check that inks are unclogged and heads are
aligned properly.

Thanks R but I forgot to mention that I had already tried that, but I just
tried that again and it still wont work. I least I know its not the ink
because I just switched over the ink cartridges and thats the first time I
have seen black in printed in nearly a week. I am now going to try Will's
suggestion. Here's hopeing.

Hello Will,
Well I tried it. No joy. I downloaded the drivers as the website you
mentioned stated and I got to Number 7. Then the installation process stated
that my printer was not connected when it was. So I used the installation
software that originally came with the printer and I'm back to the same
problem of printing in colour but not black and my System Restore not working.

Hi

You may like to check with the Hardware News Group if you haven't already
done so:

May sound silly - but, switch off the printer - unplug.
Reboot the computer - plug in the printer as if it is a new addition.
I have a very old Epson which has problems now and again.
Apart from giving it a sharp tap, I try this first.
It only let me down once.
Or the head is clogged as suggested.
You have not said the make/model of this printer - if you go to hardware
make sure you have the details. Is it HP by any chance?
Also, there is the windowsupdates group - but cannot recollect seeing
anything re printer troubles this month.
Good luck
