Problems installing RAM

Z

zeidman

I am trying to upgrade the RAM on my PC from 512MB to 1GB.

I have 3 slots on my motherboard and after doing Crucial's memory
scan and looking at their recommendations I decided to add one 512MB
RAM module to my two existing 256MB modules. I first put it into the
third and only empty slot and turned the computer on. It booted up fine
but reported that there was still only 512MB. I moved the new 512MB to
the first slot and one of the 256MB to the third slot. This time it
reported that there was 768MB or RAM.

At least I know that the new RAM works. I am wondering if there is a
problem with the third slot. Is there anyway of finding out about this?
One thing I did notice was the inside of the computer was extremely
dusty. Is there a safe way of cleaning it? Could it be that some dust
is blocking one of the connections in the third slot? (It has been open
the whole time I have had the computer)

Thanks for any help

What does the BIOS report as to the amount of memeory installed?
Does your mobo accept the amount of RAM installed and can they be intermixed?
What does the manual state as to how memory modules should be installed?
At least I know that the new RAM works. I am wondering if there is a
problem with the third slot. Is there anyway of finding out about this?

Blow all of the dust bunnies out with compressed air which can be purchased by the
can. Be careful with any compressed air be it a can or using a compressor w/hose and
nozzle. Compressors can build up water in the tank and blow it out through the line.
Cans of compresed air can get very cold and then blow out moisture as well if not
used in short spurts.

You need to check your mobo specs as to the size/type of ram supported in
what *combinations*

Do you know the model number of the motherboard? Do you have a manual for
it? If not, you can look up the specs online and you will need the model
number.
Check the specs and see what it says about intermixing chips like that. MBs
often do not like when you put multiple RAM chips of different amounts on
the same board.
Also verify that the new chip is the same type/speed as the other chips.
I suggest you run cpuz which you can download free at
http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php.
That will tell you the model number of your motherboard as well as type and
speed of RAM chips and a few other useful facts.

Second Eric's comment about different sizes. Additionally, since
different makes and models have varying degrees of compatibility and
backwards functionality, you see all kinds of problems running
different brands in the same system. Some of it is a mystery because
SPD values don't always reflect what the memory is engineered to do.

Thanks everyone for your help.
From the manual:

This motherboard accommodates three 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered
Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory modules. The memory
chips must be standard or registered SDRAM (Synchronous
Dynamic Random Access Memory). You can install 3 unbuffered
DIMM DDR 266/333 or 2 unbuffered DIMM DDR 400. Each
module can be installed with 32 MB to 1 GB of memory; total
memory capacity is 3 GB.

I am not sure what the 256 RAM module are but the 512 is DDR 400. I
guess if the 256 are also DDR 400 that would be why I cannot get the
three to work together. Is that right?

David

J

Justin Brown - SYNACS

It's not always as simple as matching DDR400 modules with same speed
DDR400 modules. It should be, but it's not. Your best bet in this case
(seeing that the 512MB module matches the motherboard) would probably
be to get an identical 512MB module and just run two of the same. That
gets you your 1GB and minimizes the chances of problems stemming from
(in)compatibility between the original and upgrade modules.

What is Everest?
Try the cpuz program I mentioned. It tells you what speed each of your RAM

Formerly? What does it cost now?
In relation to this thread, it seems to be missing one vital piece of info,
the speed of each RAM chip.
As Brian said, that MB supports DDR400/333/266/200.
All RAM chips should be the same speed, and jumpers likely need to be set if
you switch to different speed RAM chips.

Hey Eric, from what I see there's a few oddities on a second look unless it's just
me.

There are 2 boards:
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pr...LanID=0&DetailID=251&DetailName=Specification
1) M8484ALU (v2.1) which takes a SiS748/963L chipset and 3 RAM slots

http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pr...LanID=0&DetailID=341&DetailName=Specification
2) M848A (V5.0) which takes a SiS746 FX / 963(L) chipset and only has 2 RAM slots.

Both are Socket 462 and use the same modules.
Take note that the BIOS string in the Everest report shows SiS746, yet the chipset
shows SiS748.
As well it shows 8484A and not 8484ALU.

The BIOS string doesn't match either for what's shown on the mobo pages for the
first or the updates.
However the BIOS update details for 8484ALU shows "Fix non-auto detect CPU Freq
issue".

Something really seems out of sorts here and as I mentioned, it may just be me.
After the Bears won yesterday I tipped a few, not in joy but to try and forget their
p**s a** performance.

In relation to this thread, it seems to be missing one vital piece of info, the
speed of each RAM chip.
As Brian said, that MB supports DDR400/333/266/200.
All RAM chips should be the same speed, and jumpers likely need to be set if you
switch to different speed RAM chips.

What is Everest?
Try the cpuz program I mentioned. It tells you what speed each of your RAM
chips are.
If you have 400 DDR and 333 DDR chips they won't work right together.
If you switch one speed to another you should need to switch a jumper on
your MB.

So I installed Everest and got the following results for the

Everest will report the actual manufacture, serial number
and all other details of the RAM installed.
The speed rating of RAM is the speed at which it was tested
to be free from errors. The mobo clock sets the actual
speed the RAM will try to run. If the RAM is rated PC 2100,
and PC 2700 and a third is PC 3200 and the mobo is running
at 400 FSB, the RAM should all function, but if the FSB is
running at higher speeds the RAM with the lower rating will
fail first.

Modern mobo usually use software in the BIOS rather than
jumpers.

Modern mobo usually use software in the BIOS rather than

I tested Everest from a link in another thread. I don't know if there is
more than one version of it for download, but it appears it does report RAM
speed. David did not.
I didn't think you could mix RAM in the same machine (ie PC 2700 with PC
3200) but I've never bothered to try it myself for fear of ruining hardware.

I recently set the FSB speed on my home computer, and now that you mention
it, I think it was in the BIOS. I just remember it used to be jumpers.

I will find out soon how well RAM chips work with different sizes, since
they've ordered 256MB chips here for PCs with currently 128 MB total.

Good question. Looks like it's $20 for the corporate version, $30 for
the ultimate version. http://www.lavalys.com/purchase.php?lang=en

The freeware version was discontinued a year ago, as per Lavalys' news
release:
http://www.lavalys.com/news.php?article=31&selcat=PR&lang=en
In relation to this thread, it seems to be missing one vital piece of info,
the speed of each RAM chip.
As Brian said, that MB supports DDR400/333/266/200.

The idea is that if you have a model number, you have the advertised
speed (or at least the means to acquire it).
All RAM chips should be the same speed, and jumpers likely need to be set if
you switch to different speed RAM chips.

I don't know about that.
