Problems installing a plugin and program.. error message

S

Septima

I had to reinstall xp and everything seems to be working fine but a couple
older programs or plugins. They worked fine on my last installation of xp
but I keep getting an error message when trying to install them now. So not
sure if there is a setting I need to change or if the new updates for xp are
causing the problem. I have not updated to sp2.

The error I am getting is:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to teriminate the
application.

When I hit ignore it does nothing but have the light on the computer run
like it is trying to open but does nothing else.

The one is eyecandy 3.0 plugin I use with paintshop pro and the other is a
program which is no longer made. It ran fine on my last installation but I
get this error now when I try to install either. Can someone shed some light
on this .. I really would like to use the plugin the other program I can do
without :(

TIA

Hi,

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based
program
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767

This should help resolve this common problem. Basically, you will have to
expand new copies of command.com, autoexec.nt, and config.nt to the system32
folder from the WinXP CD or I386 folder on your hard drive. Sometimes, you
need to create new ones and overwrite the existing ones - the method is
described in the article.

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.
