Only some accounts within my family computer (running XP) cannot save files
or view the folders when using explore following a right click on the start
button. Can anyone please advise as to what might be the problem.

Did you highlight the file, then click File on the toolbar and scroll down
to Save or Save as? Click View and then click Details or List to show files?
Without more info is like saying "when I turn to key on in my car it won't
start, what might be the problem?"

The problem first arose when my son tried to save a MS Word document as part
of his homework. He used the toolbar to access the "Save as" to name his
file however at this point the program locked up with the hour glass
appearing. The only way to clear this was to do an ctl, alt, delete to stop
MSWord. At this point I tried to acces my sons folders, right mouse clicking
on start and then selecting the explore option. Unfortunately I could not
access any of his folders nor could I access the my computer folder. Again
the hour glass appeared.
I logged of of his account and logged in under my account and did not
experience any such problems, and could access any of my sons files and
folders. I did the full reboot process and the problem remained. Any
thoughts?

You've probably downloaded the April 11th security updates from Microsoft?
If so, there's a problem with one of them - I had the same problem as you.
