Problems adding a network printer

I have a Brother MFC-8860DB (but I think it could be any printer) on the LAN
with a node ID of "BR01" which I would like to use from a Windows XP
Professional SP2 workstation. I have found that I can add it using the Add
Printer wizard and an address of http://BR01 but not by using an address of
\\BR01, or by using an address of http://10.1.1.5 but not by using an
address of \\10.1.1.5

1. Why is this? Why do I have to use HTTP?
2. Why is it that once I have added the printer I cannot change its name
from "BR01 on http://BR01"? There is no Rename option and the name field in
Properties is protected.

Hi,

Is BR01 a standard IP printer or is it shared from an XP 'BR01' Workstation?
The latter would need default XP firewall settings changed to allow file and
printer sharing. Could be as simple as that.

Stop using those paper phone message pads
make the computer work for you.

It's a standard IP printer on the network all by itself.

OK,

What about when you added the Printer with the wizard. You need to select
the top radio button "Local printer attached to this computer". UN- tic auto
detect PnP. Then next / Then 'Create a new port" / Then a Standard TCP/IP
port..... Then name your printer or IP address.

Does that help?

Yes, that works thank you. I am able to add the printer using the port/node
name and I am also able to rename the printer afterwards.

But my original question still remains. Why can't I add it as a network
printer using the node name? I have it working but I am curious.
