I often get messages which have short "snippets" of text
on separate lines, preceded by ">". Is there anyway I
can get this to display without the ">" characters and
the extra carriage returns? from (e-mail address removed)

Those are most likely forwarded E Mails and there isn't a whole
lot you can do about it... Those are called "Indent Marks".
When some people forward stuff OVER and OVER and OVER it will
keep adding a new set of the < > each time and also some people are
sending in HTML format and others are sending in Plain Text and all
this causes the "snippets" to lose the formatting of the original letter
each time it is forwarded..
