one of the computers at work is not booting up for some
reason and says that the following file is corrupt
WINTT/SYS/VGAOEM.FON
so we need to put the original windows 2000 cd. we are a
non profit organization and have rights for images that
are put on the computers. so right now we just have images
send to us from the head office but if we go ahead and put
the image then it wipes out all the data whcih puts us ina
tough spot since that will b 6-8 months of work and time
sheets too. so i wanted to know if there is something i
can do to not loose all the data

pls let me know if someone can help

You may be able to create a bootdisk and recover/copy data
http://www.bootdisk.com/
Other than that I believe you would need the win2k cd, I'm not sure if you
borrowed a win2k cd you would be able to recover the corrupt file, its a
font file, using this.
BTW even non profit orgs. should backup data - a hard lesson

Since your organisation has a licence for multiple computers, you should
have access to the Win2000 install CD. During boot, press F8, and do a
Repair in Place - essentially, you reinstall Win2000 over top of the
existing installation. That should work without destroying your data,
but it will break links with most of the intalled appliactions, which
will have to be reinstalled (and some of them will have to be
uninstalled first.) Do a google on "Repairing Windows 2000", and you
should get to the Microsoft support page that tells you how.

Once you have recovered, back up all your data. Every office should have
a CD burner, and you should burn your data onto CD at least once a week
- more often if major changes/additions are being done that week. At $1
or so per CD, that's cheap insurance. BTW, the burned CD will have a
life about 5 years, so you may have to reburn old data if you want to
keep it much longer than that.

I do volunteer work for a charity, and one of my most
important tasks is to ensure that all its data is backed
up every night, and that it can be retrieved from the
backup medium. If your PC administrator has no such
scheme in place then you should replace that person
immediately, as he/she makes your operation non viable.

thnaks for the awsome suggestion, but just to let u know
we do a backup everyday too
but this person saved it on a local drive instead of
saving it on the network where it can b backed up from
so thanks but no thanks for the suggestion

In some cases, when past practices were inappropriate,
it may not be possible to provide assistance other than
pointing out past errors. Your organisation may not like
the advice but you may have to accept it as a harsh
reminder on how not to do things. The job I hate most
is to tell a client that his files are irretrievably lost. I spend
a lot of time, thought and effort to prevent this from
happening. If your organisation were to adopt a similar
approach then this thread would serve its purpose.
