Problem with Vista activation in VMWare

Monica

I am facing an issue while activating the Vista images. I activate
vista and store the image. When I again open the same activated image
in some other pc (different hardware confg) it is showing the image is
not activated. Is there any solution for generic activation? Please
help.

I wouldnt activate vista in a Vitual machine you might permanatly lose
your key, depending on what version of vista your installing a virtual
machine breaks some of the T&C you agreed to when you first installed
it. also once the hardware changes you lost activation status and you
have to activate again, there is no way to permanatly activate vista.

In XP we are able to take an activated image to different machine but
not in Vista. Why is this happening with Vista alone?

Thanks for the info dmex.

Jus one more question. I take a vmware image of Vista(which is not
activated). Will I be able to use the image after the expiry of Vista?
Some clock forwarding or stuff will help? I jus want to see a previous
snapshot I took.Or will it show me the Vista expired screen?

It should have been happening with Windows XP, why it didn't is a good
question. But it is happening with Vista and you are not going to be able
to get around it.

Isn't ultimate supposed to be usable on virtual machines per the EULA? As
such, shouldn't it be allowed to be activated from a virtual machine?

Monica there is a 30 day evaluation vista virtual disk from microsoft itself
that is made for you to have
vista in a virtual machine envoirnment....
The strange thing is that a few days ago.. it did not mention that it was
only 30 days, and I thought it would
last longer... ahh well...

I have downloaded it and run it using virtual pc 2007. Theoretically it is
possible to convert this to vmware.. although when I tried I could not do it
at first...

I have posted the microsoft link twice in this newsgroup...

so here it goes again:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...K+GnN0I3eAeN9xVHTCkkilOsi+iSbAoAZvcx+LCsy2w==

I dont know if this helps...

Overview
For organizations with complex desktop infrastructures, whether large or
small, Windows Vista Enterprise is the operating system designed
specifically to help realize a better return on IT investments. In this VHD,
you'll have the opportunity to road-test new and improved features including
management (e.g. MUI, BDD, etc.) usability (e.g. Search, Navigation, etc.)
and security (UAC, Windows Defender, etc.), enhancements to the Windows
Vista platform.
Top of page

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP
A virtualization product that supports the VHD format is required to use
this virtual machine. Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server are
provided for free and can be used with these VHD based virtual machines.
Please refer to the Virtual Server 2005 R2 System requirements page here.

In addition to the System Requirements for the virtualization product, you
will need additional disk and memory resources for running the virtual
machine. This VHD is pre-configured to use approximately 10GB of hard disk
space and approximately 1024MB of memory.

Thanks Tiberius,
So its only an evaluation version which can be used for 30
days.
The problem for me is, I take vmware image with vista OS and then put
it in a server. When ever I want to test my product with some new
feature in it. I will run a scrip which loads the vista image from the
server, install my product and show me the successful completion of
the installation. For this to work for ever I need an activated OS.
What can be done?

I will try to give you an idea.. I dont know if this will help..

the countdown of the vista installation starts after vista has been
installed and ONLY
when a first desktop is loaded: THERFORE:

if you use a vista image that has just been installed yet has never loaded a
desktop of a user yet
then the countdown has not started...

THEREFORE:

You can create a snapshot with VMWARE, exactly after the first install and
BEFORE a desktop has been loaded... and use that snapshot to do whatever you
want...

Each time you want to do the testing of your product you will revert to that
snapshot.

In any case I think snapshots will help you overide the limitations so you
can keep using the virtual machine as a testing tool.

I dont know if this idea is of any worth to you in what you are trying to
do...

This definitly helps Tiberius,
the countdown of the vista installation starts after vista has been
installed and ONLY
when a first desktop is loaded.

What does "first desktop loading" mean? When I install Vista in vmware
my vista screen opens. Doesn't this mean my first desktop loaded, is
there a way to take a snapshot before the vista screen appears?
