Problem with services.exe CPU utilisation

Happy New Year all
I have an AMD 1800xp PC running W2K sp4 build 2195, 512K RAM, stand alone with a broadband internet connection (NTL). The PC often hangs, making hyperlinks and office file searches unusable. Checking the processes in Task manager shows that services.exe is generally using 99% of CPU. I downloaded the latest critical updates yesterday, along with installing Adaware 6, which flushed out loads of adware and spyware. After this the improvements were dramatic ( CPU utilisation dropped to 5-15% and nothing hung), but have only lasted 12 hours. I now have the same problem again but worse than before; Outlook Express hyperlinks dont work at all now and I have to cut and paste most hyperlinks into the URL window as they mostly hang. I've tried stopping all the services possible in turn but to no avail and widows update says I have all the latest critical updates. Has anyone got any suggestions? I've also installed zonealarm freeware to fend off scum. I still have a problem with my homepage being hijacked by Search-space.com. Could the problems be connected? Thanks in advance. Trev

Try reinstalling IE6... which includes Outlook Express... then reapply your
updates.
