Problem with product activation (can't log in)

I had seen a message stating that my product needed to be activated,
but I ignored it as I thought I had already done so.

Well... the grace period lapsed, and now when I try to log in I get
prompted to activate - when I chose activate I am brought to a screen
that says this copy is already activated, and it logs me out, thereby
creating an endless loop - I cannot access the desktop.

I have tried logging in as my account, the admin acount and also under
safe mode - nothing works.

Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling the OS again?
