Problem with Outlook 2002 Automatic Update to Outlook 2003

Guest

An automatic MS update added Outlook 2003 to my computer. I own Outlook 2002
and it is still resident on my computer. The 2002 version does not work now.
When I click on Outlook 2003 it initiates an install and requests the product
key. The product key on my Office XP Standard 2002 does not work. What am I
supposed to do with the Outlook 2003? I didn't need it or ask for it.

Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]

Impossible. No automatic update would do this.
The only way to update to Outlook 2003 is to purchase it and install it
yourself.

Questioning my character by implying I am a liar is not resolving the problem
I have. The fact that an Outlook 2003 orange icon has appeared on my desktop
after an automatic update still remains. Your response indicates the depth of
your ignorance. Hopefully there is someone who has experienced this and can
offer a solution.

Oh, please. Nowhere did I call you a liar or question your character.
You have, however, completely misunderstood what has happened on your
system.
You simply cannot install Outlook 2003 from an automatic update. Plain and
simple.
Only you can figure out what really happened. You were there. We weren't.
Someone deliberately installed Outlook 2003. It may have been a trial
version you forgot about. It may have been from PDA synchronization
software. Whatever it was, how it was installed must be known before we can
figure out how you should roll back.

OK...your language is pretty strong for someone who should have seen a lot
when it comes to computers. I uninstalled Office XP about a month ago and
reinstalled it to get rid of Outlook 2003. Then a MS automatic update was
installed. After the installation, Outlook 2003 was on my desktop and my
Outlook 2002 would no longer download messages. I have owned a PC since 1981
and have owned well over a dozen units since then. I have programmed in
Basic, Fortran and Edline aswell as other languages. I am fairly confident in
my skills. I have not loaded any new software in over a year. I am at a loss
as to how Outlook 2003 can keep reappearing on my computer.

The one thing I do know...you never say never (or impossible) when it comes
to computer software. Obviously with your closed mind I am left to fend for
myself. Perhaps it is time to get out of MS and into something less of a
target for hackers, etc. Because then, the updates that have trashed my
computer performance on many occasions (SP1 for example) will not be required
as frequently.

What else have you left out? You don't think that the fact that you had
"previously uninstalled Office XP about a month ago to get rid of Outlook
2003" was relevant? That statement doesn't even make sense. Office XP has
nothing to do with Outlook 2003. You have left out far too much information
for anyone to help you. There is more to your saga than you have posted.
When you do not post clear and accurate descriptions of the steps to
reproduce your problem, you just waste everyone's time.
My contention stands. No automatic update will install Outlook 2003. That
claim is, in fact, impossible. If you post the rest of this story, we might
be able to figure something out.

Russ, you are the most angry person I have encountered in a long time. (By
the way, Outlook is bundled in the Office XP package when you buy it. So it
does make sense that uninstalling Office would affect Outlook.)

I believe I have found the problem. My computer came with a 60-day bundled
MS Office package...including Outlook 2003. I believe the MS Office updates
were somehow triggering the Outlook 2003 to install. I have never used the
bundled package and didn't know I had the package until I did a search of the
hard drive. I uninstalled the bundled MS Office package, used my Office XP
program to fix/repair the existing Outlook 2002 and all is well again. If
Outlook 2003 doesn't pop up again in a week then I may have fixed the
"impossible" problem.

Although technically the update did not download the problem, it did create
the problem.

Russ, you are probably very smart and if you hadn't shut me down with the
condesending remark implying I was dumb, you could have helped walk me
through this and we both would have learned something interesting together. I
remembered the last repair effort when I was discussing your last response to
my -email. That's why I didn't have more information.

Thanks for helping me in your backhanded way. I'll bet I'm not the only
person who experienced this.

PS:

If helping someone is so stressful, don't respond to a person's request for
help. I, at least, am experienced with computers. Most who come here don't
know anything more than they are told at Best Buy.

Sorry, but you really have a thin skin. To infer that I thought you were
dumb or was calling you a liar is really a stretch of the imagination.
It is essential that you post complete and accurate information to get
accurate help. Doing otherwise wastes everyone's time and could result in
your getting inaccurate information that would make matters worse. It is
impossible for a Windows automatic update to install Outlook 2003. That is
the first thing you needed to understand in order for you to look for other
ways in which Outlook 2003 might have been installed. I suggested what some
of those might be. Outlook 2003 cannot be installed without user
interaction. If you do not recall how it was installed, just say so.
Office XP includes Outlook 2002, not Outlook 2003. The fact that you had
uninstalled Office XP over a month ago in order to try to uninstall Outlook
2003 would have been highly relevant to figuring out the problem. That was
the second clue that finally trickled in to tell us that your problem was
completely different than what you had imagined it to be. If Outlook 2003
was installed by the OEM and you then installed an older version, this could
be a very difficult knot to untie.

Thank-you Russ. But you got all the info I knew, as I knew it. I looked back
to December 2004 at the responses you gave other requesters and you display
an utter lack of respect for people looking for help. Many of your short
smartassed replies were quickly followed up with helpful replies by other

tact and understanding and most of all patience. You replied to my question

You should volunteer somewhere where your sour disposition suits the position.

I wanted to complain about you but there does not seem to be any relevent

Sorry you feel that way, Walt. I think you misunderstood.
My reply was neither negative nor condescending. It was factual and to the
point. That's the way USENET works. It notified you that what you perceived
in fact could not have happened so that you would go back to the drawing
board and post more accurate details.
Your reply, on the other hand, was to call me ignorant. So certainly one of
us has been negative and condescending.

2003 would have been highly relevant to figuring out the problem. That
was
the second clue that finally trickled in to tell us that your problem was
completely different than what you had imagined it to be. If Outlook 2003
was installed by the OEM and you then installed an older version, this
could
be a very difficult knot to untie.

Russ, you are the most angry person I have encountered in a long time.
(By
the way, Outlook is bundled in the Office XP package when you buy it.
So
it
does make sense that uninstalling Office would affect Outlook.)

I believe I have found the problem. My computer came with a 60-day
bundled
MS Office package...including Outlook 2003. I believe the MS Office
updates
were somehow triggering the Outlook 2003 to install. I have never used
the
bundled package and didn't know I had the package until I did a search
of
the
hard drive. I uninstalled the bundled MS Office package, used my Office
XP
program to fix/repair the existing Outlook 2002 and all is well again.
If
Outlook 2003 doesn't pop up again in a week then I may have fixed the
"impossible" problem.

Although technically the update did not download the problem, it did
create
the problem.

Russ, you are probably very smart and if you hadn't shut me down with
the
condesending remark implying I was dumb, you could have helped walk me
through this and we both would have learned something interesting
together. I
remembered the last repair effort when I was discussing your last
response
to
my -email. That's why I didn't have more information.

Thanks for helping me in your backhanded way. I'll bet I'm not the only
person who experienced this.

PS:

If helping someone is so stressful, don't respond to a person's request
for
help. I, at least, am experienced with computers. Most who come here
don't
know anything more than they are told at Best Buy.

:

What else have you left out? You don't think that the fact that you
had
"previously uninstalled Office XP about a month ago to get rid of
Outlook
2003" was relevant? That statement doesn't even make sense. Office XP
has
nothing to do with Outlook 2003. You have left out far too much
information
for anyone to help you. There is more to your saga than you have
posted.
When you do not post clear and accurate descriptions of the steps to
reproduce your problem, you just waste everyone's time.
My contention stands. No automatic update will install Outlook 2003.
That
claim is, in fact, impossible. If you post the rest of this story, we
might
be able to figure something out.

Impossible!

OK...your language is pretty strong for someone who should have seen
a
lot
when it comes to computers. I uninstalled Office XP about a month
ago
and
reinstalled it to get rid of Outlook 2003. Then a MS automatic
update
was
installed. After the installation, Outlook 2003 was on my desktop
and
my
Outlook 2002 would no longer download messages. I have owned a PC
since
1981
and have owned well over a dozen units since then. I have programmed
in
Basic, Fortran and Edline aswell as other languages. I am fairly
confident
in
my skills. I have not loaded any new software in over a year. I am
at a
loss
as to how Outlook 2003 can keep reappearing on my computer.

The one thing I do know...you never say never (or impossible) when
it
comes
to computer software. Obviously with your closed mind I am left to
fend
for
myself. Perhaps it is time to get out of MS and into something less
of
a
target for hackers, etc. Because then, the updates that have trashed
my
computer performance on many occasions (SP1 for example) will not be
required
as frequently.

:

Oh, please. Nowhere did I call you a liar or question your
character.
You have, however, completely misunderstood what has happened on
your
system.
You simply cannot install Outlook 2003 from an automatic update.
Plain
and
simple.
Only you can figure out what really happened. You were there. We
weren't.
Someone deliberately installed Outlook 2003. It may have been a
trial
version you forgot about. It may have been from PDA synchronization
software. Whatever it was, how it was installed must be known
before
we
can
figure out how you should roll back.

Questioning my character by implying I am a liar is not resolving
the
problem
I have. The fact that an Outlook 2003 orange icon has appeared on
my
desktop
after an automatic update still remains. Your response indicates
the
depth
of
your ignorance. Hopefully there is someone who has experienced
this
and
can
offer a solution.

:

Impossible. No automatic update would do this.
The only way to update to Outlook 2003 is to purchase it and
install
it
yourself.

An automatic MS update added Outlook 2003 to my computer. I
own
Outlook
2002
and it is still resident on my computer. The 2002 version does
not
work
now.
When I click on Outlook 2003 it initiates an install and
requests
the
product
key. The product key on my Office XP Standard 2002 does not
work.
What
am
I
supposed to do with the Outlook 2003? I didn't need it or ask
for
it.
