Problem with Outline Numbering of Headings

Hi,

In a folder which has 4 different word documents
(which has to be in a sequence) I need to continue the outline numbering
style of Heading 1 from one document to another . By defaullt, the Heading 1
in File 2 will start with '1'. Here you can manually select the style and
customize the Numering Format to start at 'n' as required. But by doing so,
when I generate the TOC (this TOC is for multiple documents in this folder
which is created using the RD field codes option) all the Heading 1 levels in
File 2 to File 4 is starting with '1' itself instead of taking the updated
number.
Is there any method by which I can update the Heading 1 in all the files
subsequent to File 1 and the updated number sequence is reflected in the TOC
as well. Can anyone help me on this?

Combine the four word documents and save as another document so you still
have your four individual ones

When I update the chapter number of Heading 1 for the files subsequent to
File 1, the numbering of Heading 1 is starting as per the given 'Start at'
number, but the Left indentation of all other heading levels (Head 2, 3 amd
4) is getting increased automatically to 1.2 from the default value '0' which
is given in the template. The indentation of Heading 1 however remains the
same. Also when I save, close and again open the same document the Heading 1
is again starting at '1' instead of the updated number. Can anyone help me on
this?
If the documents are not retaining the updated Heading 1 number, even if
Icreate the TOC after merging the documents, there will be a mismatch in the
Heading and Page numbers of the TOC and that of the documents. The situation
is that each documents/files are so huge that we cannot retain it as a merged
document. I need to maintain it as separate files itself after the TOC
generation.

Make sure to specify any indentation in the numbering options, not via the
Paragraph dialog; that way, the settings should be preserved.

Normally, "Start at" settings for outline numbered lists should be
preserved. Have you checked the "Automatically update document styles"
option in the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box? If so, clear the option.
