Problem with network?

Situation:

5 computers hooked together via a Linksys befsr81 router. All accessing a
scheduling program on the "main" unit (has all the data). Additional
computers only have programs and look to main computer's data file for their
data. Peer to peer via the normal xp procedures, so no client server stuff
is involved. Same scheduling program works fairly efficiently in another
couple offices--very similar in setup to this one.

All computers run winxp pro. All computers from Dell. Although "main"
computer is much bigger/faster than other users.

After rebooting all computers, if 1 computer only accesses the data, it's
fast (doesn't matter whether it's the main one, or one of the other ones).
The second user (again, whether it's the main unit, or one of the others)
gets into the data and everything slows to a crawl. Almost 20 seconds to
change screens (like look at tomorrows sched, or the one for 2 weeks from
now). If the main unit is on, it's always fast...regardless of other users,
as you'd expect. But, ALL further users (from 2nd to 5th) slow down if any
other user is running that program, whether actually accessing data or not.
Doesn't slow down further-just always runs at this 20 second speed. Main
user's screens pop up almost immediately. Not even a second between choice
and screen. Other users, if only one is in there, takes maybe a second to 2
seconds at most.

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate ANY--I'm really at my wits end (which I've
discovered isn't all that long a journey!!! ::grin::)

TIA,
ron

Ron,

What is this mysterious "scheduling program"? Have you contacted the vendor?
What is the difference between this network and the other "couple offices"? The
computers here and the computers in the other "couple offices"?
