problem with internet explorer 6.0

When I try to open up my MMC consol it says that I need to have installed
Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. Once I click okay it kicks me out MMC. I do
have internet explorer 6.0. I clicked on help then click on About Internet
Explorer to find out if I need to update my explorer but the version is not
displayed. It say Version then after it is blank. I went to
windowsupdate.com and there were no updates needed. My virus protector is up
to date and so is all service packs. Even my Norton anti-virus says it needs
Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher to for it to run. My anti virus still runs
but it won't show me status window anymore. If I right click on a folder I
do have the option to scan for viruses. This is a strange problem. I feel I
need to reinstall my explorer and how do I go about doing that?

Hi,

First determine the Internet Explorer Version:

1. By using the registry:

You can determine the version of Internet Explorer that you are running by
viewing the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

If a "Version" value appears in this key, Internet Explorer 4.0 or later is
installed. The "Version" string value contains the version of Internet
Explorer 4.0 or later that is installed on your computer (for example, the
Version string value for Internet Explorer 5 is "5.0.2014.0216"). Note that
only one zero is stored in the registry for the minor version number if the
minor version number is 00. If the minor version is not 00, the full
version value is stored (for example, 5.50.4807.2300 is stored in the
registry as 5.50.4807.2300).

2. By using the Shdocvw.dll file:

For Internet Explorer 3.0 and later, the browser is implemented in the
Shdocvw.dll (Shell Document Object and Control Library) file. You can use
the version of the Shdocvw.dll file to determine the version of Internet
Explorer that is installed on your computer. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type shdocvw.dll, and then click Find Now.
3. In the list of files, right-click the Shdocvw.dll file (located at
C:\WINDOWS\system32 - For Windows 2000/XP or located at C:\WINDOWS\system -
For Windows 9x), and then click Properties.
4. Click the Version tab.

Here's the how you reinstall/repair Internet Explorer:

For Windows 9x Sytems:

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs
2. Select Internet Explorer, then Repair

For Windows XP Systems:

First, try reinstalling from the INF files.

1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type the following command
3. "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\ie.inf"
4. When prompted for the CD, Insert the windows XP cd

This fixes most problems. If not, see below the KB Article:

Hope this helps .... :)
