Problem with HP PSC 2110

My not-quite-2-year-old HP PSC 2110 MFD has developed a maddening
problem. Communication with the computer is fine, and on the rare
occasion when it works the result, whether print or scan, comes out
fine. The problem is that most of the time it refuses to do anything.

On power-up it goes into a self-test, moves the print head around, then
starts making a clicking/grinding sort of noise for a little while, then
just sits there, all lights flashing (there are, of course, no error
messages on the LCD screen) and won't respond. My unsubstantiated
hypothesis is that it is trying to move the scan head, and it won't move.

Anyone encountered anything like this before? Or at least know how I
open this sucker up to get at the scan head?

Thanks,
Jesse

The HP website has an excellent troubleshooting self help diagnostic
facility.
I found that it was spot on when I had a print head jam on my 2110.
I followed through the prompts and it told me EXACTLY what to do to
fix the problem.

I've found that most all my problems with an HP all-in-one not
responding have been on the computer side. Sometimes logging off spurs
the printer into action, sometimes rebooting Windows. I haven't had
the problem with Linux, so I attribute it all to WindowsXP and/or the HP
windows drivers.
