Problem with Excel pie charts- size of pie slices wrong

I am not a pie chart kinda guy, I rarely need to use them, so I
haven't done many with Excel. But someone I work with wants me to do
a pie chart of population by county in a region they are working in.
The problem is that Excel messes up the pie slice sizes.

Here is the data:

County A 533
County B 860
County C 1050
County D 2435
County E 6288
County F 8866
County G 87702
County H 563662

Plot them up and it messes up, at least it does with Excel 2000, which
I am running. The small pie slices are wrong, it only shows one of
these slices, not the others. To test if it is a problem of the fact
that the small slices are so much smaller than the big ones, I
combined the first three into a single value, which is 2,443, larger
than County D. But when I do a pie chart, the slice for the combined
three counties is actually smaller than County D, which is a smaller
value. I posted the values and they are correct, it just seems Excel
is screwing up the pie slice sizes.

And yes, I'd like to get the slices right. It is for a public report
and these things do get noticed, especially by the people in the less
populated areas.

Any suggestions on a workaround? Has anyone else had such a problem?

Thanks.
