Problem with drop-down list width

I have a spreadsheet that uses data validation from a
list. The dropdown list is about 8 times as wide as it
needs to be for the items in the list. It does not seem
to have anything to do with the column width of the list
items or the column width of the cell where the dropdown
resides. I have looked for hidden characters, formulas,
etc. and can't find any explanation. If you know the
answer, please let me know!

The only way I can replicate this is if I merge several cells in a row then
select that cell for my Data Validation drop-down list.
