Problem with display properties

My Windows XP Pro SP2 system had been running without any problems. I leave
it running 24\7 analysing Seti data but turn the monitor off when not
actively using the computer. The problem I have now got is Windows will only
show the classic display. If I go to display properties, appearance the
windows and buttons drop down box only shows Windows Classic Style it does
not show Windows XP Style as it should. The task bar and all other visual
effects are now the classic style. I had not even rebooted for this change
to occur, I only turned on the monitor and noticed the difference. I have
Norton Antivirus 2005 updated and Pest Patrol updated and Zone Alarm Pro the
latest version available. The only program recently installed was Security
Task Manager but that was about 1 week ago and the computer has been
rebooted since. System restore does correct the problem if I use it and I
have True Image backups if needed so the problem is not terminal. I would
just like to try and find out why the problem started. Has any one seen this
problem before. I did try sfc /scannow but it made now difference. I keep
the system updated with the latest drivers etc but have made now changes
other than installing Security Task Manager but I cannot see that causing
the problem.

Hi Glen,

Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
Double-click Themes
Set it to Automatic
Start the Service manually

Thanks for the quick reply Ramesh but the Themes service was set to
automatic and was started. I stopped it and restated it but even after
rebooting it made no difference.

Any other ideas.

Glen

Something else I have just noticed is when I open Computer Management and
click on disk management I get "unable to connect to logical disk manager
service". I have checked and the logical disk manager is set to automatic
and is started. I even started the logical disk manager admin service but
still cannot access the disk management. I can't see a direct link to the
theme related problem listed below but can anyone shed any light on why a
perfectly solid working computer has started playing up when all it has been
doing recently is analysing SETI data.

Glen,

Open this folder:

C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna
Is the "luna.msstyles" file available?

C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
See if "Luna.theme" file is present.

If one or both of the the files are missing, extract new copies from XP CD or from another XP system.

Ramesh

Both files are present. Any other ideas. I know I can restore from a backup
but I would like to try and find out why this problem happened so it doesn't
happen again.
