Problem with disconnecting dialup-connection

Hi,
I used to run my PC (XP Professional, SP1) in an LAN
intranet environment, but now since I moved the PC to my
own home I use a regular modem dialup connection to access
the internet.
My modem is a PCI Netodragon MDV92XP with WinXP-certified
drivers and it works just finde, but when I try to
disconnect manually by clicking on that little symbol on
the right below side of the taskbar (you know, this "two
screen connected"-like-symbol), Windows prompts this
strange error alert reading "Cannot disconnect because
other programs are trying to connect or disconnect" - what
kind of problem do I have to deal with here? Plus, I can`t
even get into the "netwprk status" screen. I have several
different dialup connections, and the problem appears with
all of them. The only way that I can successfully
disconnect is by ripping the modem off the socket. That
works fine, but this shouldn´t be state of the art in a
sophisticated operating system, right?
Another strange thing is that I cannot connect to internet
manually by clicking "connect to" in the program launcher.
The only way I achieve this is by clicking on any internet
or mail application like Mozilla, IE, Opera etc.
does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

well, thank you for that hint, this is what I already took
under consideration and I let several virus scanners run
and finally I had the program Stinger by McAfee (latest
version from Nov 14, able to scan and remove all the latest
versions and varieties of msblast, LoveSan, Sobig etc. and
other nasty worms and viruses )scan each and any corner of
my harddisks, but didn´t find anything explicitly of interest.
So what else could be thought of as a solution to this problem?
