Problem with cross references

With Word XP, I am using captions for figures and cross references to the
captions for references to figures. The problem is that I am very often
getting the message "Error! reference source not found". I can understand
why this might happen if I move a figure from one place to another but it is
happening all the time without moving figures and it is becoming very
annoying.

How can I prevent this happening?

This is not typical behaviour. How are you inserting the captions?

Cross-references in word

Hi I use Word XP and get the same problem, I can return to a previously cross-referenced chapter and all or most of the links now read [font=&quot]Error! Reference source not found.
[/font][font=&quot]This is very annoying, as my document is now approaching 100 pages. Cross references are to headings, tables and figures. Manually correcting them doesn't seem like an option.

I insert the references using Insert>reference>cross-reference

Anyone HELP!!!!!
