Problem with "Back" while browsing

While clicking a hyperlink on a web page and visiting that new site,
oftentimes I can't get back to the previous, original web page. The green
"Back" arrow is in the toolbar, but it won't navigate back...I'm just stuck
on the new page. I can "X" out of the page, but then I'm at the Desktop.
This doesn't seem to happen with every website...I'm thinking that it is
just some bad behavior on certain sites. Kind of like getting hijacked. Any
explanation of this phenomenon is appreciated.

Sometimes the site sets it's position in your 'history'
to be the top item. When this happens go to the
little 'triangle' next to the green arrow and pick the
second item on the list.
