Problem with autoplay

Gary Sams

Recently I can't get CDs or Dvds to run automatically when I place them in
my DVD or CDRW drives. I have checked all the settings on the autoplay tab
in properties for each drive and they seem to be OK, but I have to run
programs manually.

I had another, possibly associated, problem with my DVD drive last week when
it insisted there was
no CD in the drive even when there was. I resolved this by uninstalling the
drive and allowing Windows XP to recognise it automatically when I
re-booted, but autoplay still doesn't work,

Any suggestions?

I have windows XP home on a AMD Athlon 2100 processor with 80MB hard drivwe
and 512 MB ram. The drives are both Lite-on -

Thanks

Gary

Kelly's has extensive auto play info at her link below. Scroll down the

Hi Gary,

First, get a CD lens cleaner disk and run it on your CD drive. These
inexpensive disks often restore correct functionality to the drive. If the
system can't read the disk right, it will not do anything with it.

If it doesn't help, you can reset the autoplay defaults using this file:
ftp://12.107.147.141/WinXP%20Autorun%20fix/

Just copy it to your system and run it.

Gary, check here. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm Select A
and scroll to autoplay.

Thanks, I have tried as many as the suggestions as I can follow on your link
but without success.

Shell hardware detection is already set to automatic.
In file types. Highlight audio CD advanced, Play is already in bold type.
Gpedit.msc does not seem to be a valid command on my system
Start/Run/Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\Cdrom.
AutoRun is set to 0 but changing it to 1 has no effect.

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Autop
layHandlers. Right click on the AutoplayHandlers subkey and delete it. Do
the same here under this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives"

Does this mean to delete the autoplayhandlers and drives folders and all
their subfolders? - seems scary to me - it is a lot to delete,
