Problem with 2 operating platforms on same laptop

I had to do a clean install of Windows XP Pro on a new laptop because the
original installation lost its ability to recognise the Windows password.

However, instead of removing and reinstalling, it simply installed another
operating platform as well as the first and seems to now be running two
completely separate versions, each with its own Security Software (different
brands!) and , understandably, the computer is running slow. I cannot
uninstall from Add or Remove Programs because no operating system is showing
as installed, in either version.

Any suggestions how to locate and remove one version?
