Problem with 1 of my screensavers

P

Peter

I have several "desktop Themes" stored in My Documents folder for the
various screensavers I use. The latest one I downloaded is the "3D Windows
XP" from MSN. Every time I switch to this from another screensaver it wont
work and I have to go into the registry and remove double quotes ""xxx""
from the key to enable it. Anyone any idea why this would be happening?

I went into it as follows....
Start/Run/regedit/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/CONTROLPANEL/DESKTOP... right click that
and all the keys are displayed. Go down to the appropriate screensaver.exe
and right click on that. Click "modify" and remove the inverted commas.
The trouble is it will work as long as the screensaver is used, but will
revert back if you use a different one and then go back to it. I think it
must have something to do with the original downloading and placement. It's
a nuisance but I can live with it. It's strange though that the other 4
scr. savers work perfectly each time.

The .theme file is a text file. Open it in notepad and look for a section similar to this:

[boot]
SCRNSAVE.EXE=%WinDir%system32\sspipes.scr

Compare it to a .theme file where the screensaver is applied as expected. I'm guessing there's an unnecessary set of quotation marks in the theme file.

If you don't apply a theme, but simply switch screensavers in the display properties dialog, does this particular screensaver apply itself properly?

Once you've performed the manual edit to the registry, can you save it as part of a user-defined theme and apply that successfully?

It does the same thing. As fare as saving the registry I'm not too
technically minded I'm afraid, not sure how to do that.

This is because you have spaces in the name/path. Use as an example:

Marine Aquarium 2.scr > rename it to > MarineAquarium2.scr

In the registry, screensaver will work correctly if it is listed as so:
c:\windows\system32\marine~1.scr

Peter,

Did you rename the screensaver file itself or just edit to the 8.3 name in the registry?

If the latter, try the former.

In the registry, screensaver will work correctly if it is listed as so:
c:\windows\system32\marine~1.scr

Screen Savers do not work correctly if listed as so:
""c:\windows\system32\marine aquarium 2.scr""

It does the same thing. As fare as saving the registry I'm not too
technically minded I'm afraid, not sure how to do that.
If you don't apply a theme, but simply switch screensavers in the
display
properties dialog, does this particular screensaver apply itself
properly?

Once you've performed the manual edit to the registry, can you save it
as
part of a user-defined theme and apply that successfully?

Keith

Keith, I did that and no, there are no "" in there at all. This IS
strange!
The .theme file is a text file. Open it in notepad and look for a
section
similar to this:

[boot]
SCRNSAVE.EXE=%WinDir%system32\sspipes.scr

Compare it to a .theme file where the screensaver is applied as
expected.
I'm guessing there's an unnecessary set of quotation marks in the
theme
file.

Keith

I went into it as follows....
Start/Run/regedit/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/CONTROLPANEL/DESKTOP... right
click
that
and all the keys are displayed. Go down to the appropriate
screensaver.exe
and right click on that. Click "modify" and remove the inverted
commas.
The trouble is it will work as long as the screensaver is used, but
will
revert back if you use a different one and then go back to it. I
think
it
must have something to do with the original downloading and
placement.
It's
a nuisance but I can live with it. It's strange though that the
other
4
scr. savers work perfectly each time.
I am having the same problem with several 3D Screen Savers.
I have sometomes recieved the following error message " Run-Time
Error"53"
File Not Found.
Can you explain to me what you did to the registry ?

I have several "desktop Themes" stored in My Documents folder

Tried both. I uninstalled it and fired off a comment to Microsoft. Case
closed at present anyway.
Peter,

Did you rename the screensaver file itself or just edit to the 8.3 name
in the registry?

If the latter, try the former.

Well, I tried everything you suggested. and it still happens... I'll just
have to get used to correcting the registry each time I choose that
particular ss.
Now to find out why my Viruscan doesn't start as scheduled.... long deep
sigh!!
Footnote, I can't even (easily) ask a friend to help me by remote assistance
as I got rid of Wiundows Messenger and my attempts to re-install it have
failed.

Most welcome and this should stick, if not, run this edit and good luck!

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Thanks Kelly, you are as always, knowledgeable and helpful.
....work and I have to go into the registry and remove double quotes

This is because you have spaces in the name/path. Use as an example:

Marine Aquarium 2.scr > rename it to > MarineAquarium2.scr

In the registry, screensaver will work correctly if it is listed as so:
c:\windows\system32\marine~1.scr

Screen Savers do not work correctly if listed as so:
""c:\windows\system32\marine aquarium 2.scr""
