Marsha

I have been using the following with XP and IE6:

You can force Internet Explorer to open in whatever size or position you
want by going to Tools | Internet Options and entering the following line as
the Address in the Homepage panel: javascript:
resizeTo(800,600);moveTo(0,0);document.location.href='http://www.yourhomepage.com'

Change the size and location to whatever values you prefer, and replace
yourhomepage with your actual home page.

Well, I just did a reinstall of XP to include SP2, and I can no longer get
the script to work. When I put the script into the homepage panel and
restart IE, IE very briefly flashes on the screen, and then just terminates
like it wasn't ever opened. No error message, nothing. I suspect this may
have to do with the new security and javascript, but I have no real idea
what has stopped working. Maybe there is a newer way to do size and position
on startup? Or a way to get this older way to work?

Hello PA Bear - sorry for the double post, just saw a comment that the
newsgroup for IE6 was preferred, so ..... (I posted this also in the IE5
group, but won't again - it's an IE66/SP2 problem for me).

Anyway, thanks for your help.

None of the simple solutions you mentioned work for me - I'm using a dual
display, and used the javascript to open IE and position it so it was larger
than one display (think left pane on one screen and main pane taking up all
of right screen). If I position IE in that manner, when it reopens it just
fills the right screen. Of course "maximized" doesn't help since it will
only fill one screen.

So, I really do need the script to work or some other solution. Sorry for my
long discourse, and I do appreciate your help.

Marsha,

This is yet another lockdown implemented in SP2, afaik. Here is an excellent
workaround by one Mr.Tony.

Thank you so much. The method by Mr. Tony (and others) works just fine.

Now I have a new problem with the same thing - IE will no longer let me set
a size larger than one display - I have dual monitors and have been setting
the size to use part of my left monitor and all of my right one. That
doesn't seem to work anymore - nothing larger than what fits into one
display unless I drag it myself. Puzzle

Try posting to these NGs:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize

microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

Thanks very much to both Ramesh and PA Bear, I finally got there.

It took not only the Mr. Tony fix for the script, but setting a fake web
site in the header of the script as a "local" site with low security - then
IE allows a moveTo that crosses display boundries. Messy, but it works.
Thanks again for the patience and help.

You're welcome Marsha.

Hi you all,

Reading Marsha's article I foudn out that I exactly had the same
problem. Thank you all for these fantastic advices.

But my problem goes a bit further:

My font scaling (in the extended desktop settings) is set to 120 DPI
(125%). Until before SP2 this worked great for me on my screen. Since
SP2 IE scales everything. Using the statement
'javascript:window.resizeTo(1024,768)' in fact resizes to 1024 ×
125%,768 × 125% which becomes a real size of 1280 × 960. What is even
worse, all images are resized to 125%. This is especially disturbing if
one creates websites and needs an exact scaling. And it looks uggly,
too.

Does anyone know a way to set this behaviour back to what it was before
SP2?

Have a great time!

Thomas

I am having the same problem as Marsha. I tried to create the html file and
all that happens is that the html file opens. I must be missing something
very important.

Thanks,
Rick J.

Hi Rick :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_5.htm#shuts_down

If sitll no joy then.....

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or other scumware on your system
causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Be aware that, some
very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can replicate themselves
repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly. Please follow all
instructions carefully to be sure your system is thoroughly cleaned

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder here

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html

and AdAware and Spybot.
Download the newest version of HiJackThis here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php
(or Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4392.html

Also visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:

On-Line Check

http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm

and

Quick-Fix Protocol.
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.php

Basically, throw everything here at your "infection".

And be sure to use the HijackThis. Please DO NOT post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the HiJackThis Support Forums below:
http://www.hijackthis.de/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10&guestlanguageid=4
the Aumha HiJackThis Forum
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

or Bleeping Computer Forum

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html

to allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of the
necessary steps to clean your system.

(Note: To avoid having your log deleted or ignored, you *must* do the two
things listed here:

(1) Don't post a HijackThis log until you have already done preliminary
scanning of your system for parasites. I recommend you go to QuickFix page
on this site - http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm - and run all steps
indicated, exactly as specified. Make the HJT log your last step, then post
to one of the sites above if you are still having problems.
(2) In your post, please specify what precleaning you have done, and specify
the problem that is prompting you to run this log in the first place.)

Also this program searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
Also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

or ........

Download Sysclean.com, from Trend Micro, here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp along with the latest pattern
file, here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp
Be sure to read the "How-to" info here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these: http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/.
(If you download and use the updater from the beginning, it will
automatically handle downloading the other files. Place them in a dedicated
folder after appropriate unzipping, and then run. This scan may take a long
time, as Sysclean is VERY extensive and thorough

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I'm missing something. Everything looks correct but I still get the same
results.
This is what I have in a html file in C: and entered as the home page.

<!-- saved from url=(0018) http://www.msn.com -->
<html><head>
<title></title>
<script language=â€Javascriptâ€>
resizeTo(800,600);
moveTo((window.width-800)/2,(window.height-600)/2);
document.location.href=’http://www.msn.com’;
</script>
</head>
<body>
</body></html>

What next?

Thanks,

Hi,
See: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/resizeiehome.htm

Note that when you change the URL, in this line of the script
<!-- saved from url=(0025)http://www.winxptutor.com -->
(0025) is the number of characters (including periods) in the URL.
So if you chose Yahoo as the start page, the line would be
<!-- saved from url=(0020)http://www.yahoo.com -->

Don,

I recently purchased a new 17" LCD monitor. Now with the higher resolution
my home page only fills a little more than 1/2 of the screen, even when
maximized. Not every web page does this. I have resized the MSN home page in
the past (before SP2) to eliminate the bottom scroll bar. I just thought that
I could use the same procedure to fill up the screen. I guess not.

Thanks for your time,
Rick J.

When I say that the page only fills 1/2 of the screen I mean that the text
and graphics fill 1/2 of the page. I'm sorry but I don't know what you mean
"coding on the page"

Thanks,
Rick J.
