Problem using ftp hyperlink

Trying to download from netgear or any other ftp hyperlink and the
download button brings up an ftp:\\ line in the search window.
(ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg834_v2_10_22.zip)
which promptly come us with the 'page cannot be displayed' frame.

Another computer Win98 has no problems and the download proceeds normally..
So the netgear ftp server is OK..
Has something changed since SP2 or is there something I have to set for
ftp through IE to work.. I am sure it worked earlier in the year..

Hi,
You might try placing the site in Trusted Sites (Internet Options>
Security.) Uncheck "Require server verification" and enter the site as
*.netgear.com

In Internet Options> Advanced> Browsing, try "Use Passive FTP" both checked
and unchecked. You may have to restart to make the changed setting stick.

Disable, for diagnostic purposes, any third-party security software-
firewall, antivirus, ad-blockers, etc. Turn on the Windows firewall (Control
Panel> Windows Firewall) before disabling a third-party firewall. You may
have to reconfigure or reinstall a program. Disable toolbars and other
add-ons to IE from IE> View> Toolbars or Tools> Manage add-ons.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,
Thanks for replying.. the 'use passive FTP' I had tried on and off
several times before at someone else's suggestion..
I added the netgear domain to the trusted site list and that made no
difference.. Other FTP hyperlinks have also failed though.

It disabled all my 6 add ons and switched of all the toolbars and I still
get the same problem..
I suspect it might be a registry problem somewhere as occasionally I've
started CuteFTp Which I use all the time for my own web management and for
some reason it has already acquired the download file address and sometimes
even starts downloading immediately albeit to the wrong place..
In the netgear instance it (CuteFTp) had acquired the file address but
would not download from the downloads.netgear.com site without a password.
Perhaps I should uninstall CuteFTp and see if that is makes the change..
Though I am loathe to do that and have to re-install it again as I use it
most days for other webwork..

thanks again
Michael

Michael, it might be something to do with CuteFTP.

I used WS-FTPro for a time and it does integrate with IE - intercepting FTP
requests and such, but recently it seems like on some systems it actually
broke something. Perhaps some updated component of IE is what does the
"Breaking" and reinstalling will fix it. Sorry this is mostly anecdotal and
a lot of maybes :)

I also failed miserably to get Homesite's FTP working some time ago and gave
up with it. I suspect IE does not really like it's FTP being stolen :)

Best regards, just throwing in 2c.

Thanks Charlie for confirming the possibility..
I expect I'll leave it alone until I have to re-install things.. I have
another computer Win98 (also with CuteFtp) that will work and I normally
use CuteFTP for other transfers.. It's just that this bugged me again on
Friday and I thought I'd see if anyone had any answers..
Many thanks
Michael
