problem setting up two computer peer-to-peer network

hey,
i just bought a cross over cable and i connected my two laptops. then i set
up a small home network (run the wizard on both) without sharing the internet
connections. the thing is, now i can't seem to reach the other computer. how
can i do it?
i tryed adding a network place but when i open MSHOME (my network's name) it
doesn't show any computers.
could you just tell me what i'm doing wrong or point out some helpful sites?
both the machine are running on winXP,
