Does your connection to that server go through any other internet provider's
equipment before it gets to aol.com? If so, such connections to port 25
are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.

You might check your settings. The instructions are for Outlook Express
but should also work under Windows Mail.

For AOL:

http://email.about.com/od/windowsmailtips/qt/et_access_aol.htm

http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/imap/

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties. On the
Advanced tab change port 25 to 587. On the Servers tab,
check the box for "My server requires authentication." Then
click on the adjacent Settings button, select "Log on using"
and enter your AOL credentials. That should do it.
