Is there any way in XP (Home Edition) to set up a shortcut or an
executable so that a particular program always runs with a specific
user's privileges even though the actual user running it has a limited
user account, in the same way that it would if I were to use the "Run
As" option and manually enter another user's details?
To expand and explain:
Four other members of my family share my computer with me - wife and
three kids. Following recent experiences with my teenage daughter, her
misguided installation of Kazaa and the bucket load of viruses that
followed, I've now upgraded my previous Win ME installation to XP Home
Edition.
The file system has been converted from FAT32 to NTFS and there are now
five XP user accounts, four of which are "limited" users (ie. Everybody
but me - I really want to control what gets installed and run on this
machine as best I can).
Unfortunately, the "limited" users don't appear to be able to run much
of anything. The easiest example is my son's account. He plays an
Internet game called Eve Online. After upgrading the PC, I reinstalled
his game, ran it under my account to set up the firewall rules on Norton
(and I'll say now that in twelve months time I'm going back to
ZoneAlarm, but that's a different story) without any problem.
Log in on his limited XP account, try and run the game and it goes
through its usual authentication process, then fails to connect.
Right click on the executable and select "Run As" then tell the game to
run with my XP account details and accompanying admin privileges and the
game connects and runs fine.
Naturally, I've emailed the support desk of the game's providers, and am
awaiting a response from them...
In the meantime I thought I'd ask here - Is there any way in XP Home
Edition I can give a specific program particular account privileges,
regardless of who runs it?
Thanks,
Bill
