Ihave inadvertently disabled the RPC service in XP. When I tried to re-enable it, by selecting 'properties' with the service highlighted. No properties window is displayed

I tried to restart in safe mode, but again whenever I try to pull up the properties window for the RPC service nothing comes up. I also seem to have lost the Start Menu altogether, but am able to access the control panel by using the run optio

Hope this assists:
Use your WinXP CD and boot to the Recovery Console:
1. Type the following command: Enable RPCSS Service_Auto_Start
2. Press the Enter key
3. Type: exit
4. Press Return
The computer will now restart.

you are not allowed to disable the rpc service ever.

if you used a hack and did so anyway you are indeed
screwed.

try a repair install and then backup data and do a clean
install(slave the drive to recover the data)
