I have printer model HP Deskjet 340. I have tried to print many times, but
it won't. After clicking the icon print on the word doc, the ink cartridge
in the printer starts moving from right to left. It doesn't move to the othe
end in one go. It moves forward a little bit, then it moves back. Then again
it moves forward then back and finally it reaches the other end. It still
keeps moving but nothing is getting printed.

I would appreciate if anyone can help.
Thanks.

Are there any lights on or blinking, and do they blink in unison or do they
alternate? A detailed description of the light pattern and whether the pattern
changes will help.
Secondly does it feed or try to feed paper when you do the self test as
follows.....turn off the printer, press and hold the paper feed button, press
and release the power button, release the paper feed button. If you are not
using the sheet feeder and the busy light turns on and the online light blinks
then load a sheet of paper into the manual feed. Let us know what happens.

Tony-

I also have the 340 but haven't used it in several years. How long has it
been since you successfully printed to it?

There is a chance the lubrication has dried out on the parts associated
with the print head, so it has to struggle to move. See if you can find a
place to apply some light-weight machine oil (sewing machine oil or 3-in-1
oil).

If it has been long since it was used, the print head is most likely
clogged and the ink dried out. Fortunately, the ink cartridge has an
integral print head, so you get a fresh one with a fresh cartridge.
However, a very old spare cartridge may also be bad, as I recently found
out. Even though it was still sealed, ink had leaked and dried.
Apparently the seal wasn't so good!

If you do have a fresh cartridge installed, try cleaning its electrical
contacts with a clean cloth or paper towel. Don't use anything more
abrasive than a soft pencil eraser, if there is any corrosion found.
