problem playing movies

I've just started playing movies on my two-year-old Dell laptop, which runs
WinXP. The computer came with Cyberlink's PowerDVD, which I updated right
away. The first movie I started to play is showing close-captioning, even
though I have it turned off. Is this likely an issue with the movie itself
or with the software? If the latter, is there better software I can install?

Thank you!

Cyberlink PowerDVD is a good program...
the following freeware may be worth a try also:

VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/

In VLC...the following steps should disable subtitles:
Tools / Preferences / Show Settings / All /
Expand...Video / Subtitles/OSD...
Uncheck...Autodetect subtitle files / Save...

Thank you, John! I'll check out VLC and will report back.

So far, so good, John. Thanks to your instructions, VLC is showing the movie
without the close captioning. One more question: How do I get VLC to be the
program that opens the DVD file? Right now, when I close the DVD drawer,
PowerDVD automatically opens the file. I then have to close that program and
open VLC.

Thank you again!

I don't use the VLC Player myself so I can't varify if the following
instructions work:

Good luck,

Thank you, Donald! I had no idea it would be so complex to do this. (I hate
dealing with the registry.) I'll give it a try later, when I've built myself
up to it...
