Problem outlining contiguous columns?

We have many instances where we want to group contiguous columns using the
outline feature. However, we cannot maintain separate column groups because
each new group merges with the prior group, if there is no dividing column.
This defeats our need to maintain the autonomy of each grouping at the same
level. Is there an option or setting that will force outlining to preserve
each group, regardless of whether they are contiguous nor not?

Ultimately, we simply want to expand and collapse discrete groups as needed
with one button push, using the outline +/- icons. This will allow us to
customize the groups that are displayed or printed, depending on our needs
at the time. If we cannot use outlining, is there another simple method
whereby we can accomplish this with one button click per group, much like
the outline feature?

This is not really accurate.

If you grouped A, B, C, and E, F, G, and I, J, K,
they would all be in the same #2 group level.

You could collapse and expand each group individually, or en masse.

What am I not understanding about your problem?

Hello RD,

Correct, but notice that you had to insert a blank column between each of
those groups in order to maintain their original identity as a group (i.e.,
columns D and H). In our case, we want to maintain the integrity of each
group, without the spare columns in between.

I realize this would potentially generate an interface problem with the
expand/collapse buttons that reside in that spare column. However, this is
also a problem if you hide the undesired blank columns anyway. Regardless,
the principal is the same, we are looking for a way to group contiguous
columns (no blank columns), maintain there identity, and then open and close
them as desired with a single click of a button.

I recognize this could probably be programmed with a macros, but we were in
hopes there was a simpler solution using the outline feature.

Thanks,

Richard

Grouping will not work without a "summary"/"total" row or column between
groups.

If you hide all the total columns, you would still be able to individually
collapse (hide) the groups by simply clicking on the black line above the
group.
However, you would not be able to expand an individual group in this format,
since the hidden total column containing the outline symbol is hidden.
You would need to expand the entire group level by clicking on that level's
number in the outline area.

Code would appear to be your only option.
