problem opening excel files from my documents folder

After saving an excel document I can only open it from
within excel. If I click on the file icon in "My
Documents",I get the error
message,"C:\MyDocuments\filename.xls is not a valid Win32
document" This occurs with all.xls files. What can I do to
correct this problem? Thanks...

.I think I solved it myself.Even though the "Properties"

dialogue showed "open with Microsoft Excel", I clicked
on "change" and entered Microsoft Excel and, presto, now
all my excel files will open from "My Documents." If
anyone can tell me why this occurred, I would certainly
appreciate it. Thanks.
