Problem Installing XP Professional on new Machine

Guest

When I purchased my old laptop it came with a copy of Windows XP Professional
w/ SP1. I no longer use my laptop and have since upgraded to a desktop and
have successfully installed this copy of Windows XP Pro w/ SP1 onto it.
However, I am having a lot of trouble activating it.

The Product ID that is on my Windows XP Pro Manual is coming back as
invalid, but that cannot be the case as it has worked flawlessly on my old
laptop and came from a major computer manufacturer/vendor. If someone can
direct me to a phone number I can call or offer any suggestions I would
appreciate it.

You'll need to "activate by phone" to obtain a
new activation code....takes about 5 minutes.

Most laptops come with an OEM version of XP that is licensed for the
original computer and is not supposed to be transferred to a new computer.
That is one of the reasons that OEM software is cheaper. That said you may
be using the wrong key. Normally the key is on a sticker attached to the
computer. On most laptops it is on the bottom of the computer.

Based on your description, you have an OEM licenses for WinXP on the
old laptop. An OEM version must be sold with a non-peripheral piece of
hardware (normally a motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and
is _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM
license, once installed, is not legitimately transferable to another
computer under _any_ circumstances.

You'll need to purchase a new WinXP license to go along with the
new computer.
