I am having a problgem installing XP home on a Dell Inspiron 3500 using an
original Dell OEM CD

I get as far as the computer trying to install a file called ASMS. Suddenly
the computer stops being able to read the CD which it booted off and it cant
find this file in E:\WIN98 (which is I presume where it is)

Is this a known problem and is there a workaround please?

Sounds like a faulty (or incorrect) CD - if it stops being able to read
from the CD @ the same point you try.

BTW you will not find anything useful in E:\WIN98 when trying to install
Win XP. In fact this leads me to belive your using the wrong CD, as I
think only Win 98 CDs have this folder.

Sorry about that, looking for win98 must have been a typo as I was trying to
install 98 and was getting nowhere so I tried XP. The computer must have
been looking for some different directory and I accidentally put win98 in
the OP without checking what it actually said on the screen

I stopped the install and turned the unit off. Although I had been trying to
restart the install numerous times before finally posting and it had always
stopped on this file (I now suspect that this file is the first which is
looked for by any installation); an hour later for some reason the install
started seeing the file (or the CD drive) again.

I will learn how well XP runs on a 366 64 Meg computer andwhether Rev 10 of
the BIOS will support XP in practice and whether I need to downgrade to
98SE to get any functionality in practical terms

With hardware this old XP will be a dog!
