Problem installing downloaded programs on Vista

Hello,

I'm having some problems installing downloaded programs in Vista. I'm
using the Home Premium edition, and this is a vanilla install.
Hardware is all up to date, E4500 C2 Duo, 3 GB memory, 945 intel
chipset, discreet NVidia 8600 GT graphics. Certainly should be
capable of running Vista without a problem, and I don't think that's
my issue.

Here's my situation. After installing vista the first things I did
was go to the motherboard maker's website and get the latest drivers
for the audio, lan, and chipset. I also downloaded the Nvidia G-Force
drivers from their website. Finally I picked up copies of Avast Anti-
Virus and Firefox from the official sites.

Each of the drivers were specifically for Vista.

When I try to run each of these programs, it first asks me to allow or
cancel, I choose allow. Immediately I get a message telling me that
the program has stopped running and windows is looking for a
solution. The progress bar quickly stops, and I only have the option
to dismiss the dialog box. With some of the programs I get an option
to tell MS about my problem, but not all programs... Specifically
Firefox.

The user is setup as an administrator, and I've tried just running the
programs by double clicking and also by right clicking and choosing
the run as administrator option. I get the exact same results for
both.

The interesting thing is it seems that there don't seem to be any
problems installing programs from CD. The video drivers included with
the card install without a hitch. As do the original drivers for the
devices on the motherboard (Although the AC97 software included isn't
for Vista). My friend also installed a couple games from DVD without
a problem. (It's his computer, I'm just his setup monkey)

What I've tried:
o Install Vista updates via Windows Update. 30 some updates installed
and no change.
o Reinstall Vista in a new directory (the backup to "windows.old"
method) I did not format the drive.

Is there a known issue or setting I need to change here? Seems odd
that out of the box I can't install downloaded programs.

Sometimes with a downloaded programme from the net, if you right click it
and look at the properties, it will tell you the programme came from another
computer and may be blocked. Click the checkmark and unblock the programme.
See if it installs now.

The default location of \Users\<user>\downloads\ Is where the files
have been downloaded to. I also moved the files to another partition
after downloading.

Should it matter where the file is downloaded to? Seems bizarre to me
that this would make any difference.

I will try the suggestion to check the properties dialog and see if
there's an alert that the program is blocked. Seems like there should
be an error message to that tune though if that is the case, at least
less ambiguous than "<program> has stopped running"

Hey I have the same issue. Did you ever get the problem solved? Please

I don't have as complex an issue as this previous poster, but I cannot
install certain software. For one, a tax program would not install and gave
me some large reason. Same thing with a game I am trying to install. I
actually had to create a notepad of some of the issues and send that to the
maker of the game, and they finally have replied, only to tell me that
several other people are having the same issue.

I want to put the VM on my Vista so I can run XP again. I never had any
problem gettting games or any other software to download from the CD onto the
PC.

This is so frustrating since I lost a lot of my games when my old PC crashed.

Oh, and don't ask the maker's help site for any help. They messed me up so
much I had to go to Restore to get my computer back to running right! Well,
make that as "right" as Vista is going to run!

I have exactly the same problem as described below. I just cannot run any
downloaded programs.
Is there anyone with a solution?
