problem in word

im having trouble in word, when i highlight a word or a sentence, then press
backspace nothing happens. it works when i press delete just not backspace.
also if i highlight something and then just got to type over it, nothing
happens, the original bit that was highlighted becomes unhighlighted and
nothing happens
 
On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Edit tab. Check the box
next to "Typing replacing selection" and then click OK.
