Problem getting windows 2000 server to recognize xp computers

We upgraded our LAN local domain computers to windows xp. 5 of the
computers had software problems, so I formatted them rather than just
upgrading. These five have problems, they usually will not recognize
the network, although sometimes they can detect it. when I try to
logon to the network, they say 'local network is not available', or
'server is not available '. This always happens if I am logged onto
the server, if no one is logged onto the server, it still happens
sometimes.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Ray
