Problem encountered using IE 6.0 and WMP 8.0

I am currently having a problem viewing streaming media
via IE. I have Windows XP Professional 2002 SP1 running
on my PC. I am using IE 6.0 and Windows Media Player 8.0.

When I try to open an archived media file and play it
from a web site I get the following messages.
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.".

In this pop-up message window is a link to this error
information. Error signature - AppName: iexplore.exe,
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106, ModName:strmdll.dll, ModVer: 4.1.0
3928 Offset: 0002t596

When I click the OK button on the window IE closes and so
does WMP 8.0.

I've looked in Google, other MS newsgroups and the
Knowledge Base looking for problem information but have
only found other people reporting a similar problem. I
have not been able to find suggested solutions other than
altering the bandwith which did not fix this problem.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

strmdll.dll is suspicious.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

I tried your suggestion but I still got the same error
pointing to the strmdll.dll file and the IE window and
WMP window were both forced to close.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks again.

I got some help with this from my local PC support group.
We spent the greater part of a work day trying various
changes (ex. deleting and creating a new windows profile).
Finally, the PC tech was able to duplicate this problem
on his PC and went off to figure out this problem. Today,
he called and showed me that making a change to the IE
browser options Connections tab fixed the problem. In the
LAN Settings information I unchecked all boxes in
Automatic configuration and checked both boxes in Proxy
server and added address and port information based on
his findings. Once this was done I was able to view the
streaming video file via IE and the WMP.

Thanks to all for your help.
