I'm not sure if I am the only one with this problem, ...
But I just uninstalled a program today (i.e., Battlefield 1942),
and the Desktop Icon did not go away
(and I cannot DELETE it)

dum question, but did u restart te comp?

Thanks Chris, ... restarting the computer eliminated the icon.

However, this just demonstrates another one of the MANY flaws of Windows
Vista!
As an example, in Windows XP, deleting an icon after unistalling a program
did not require a re-boot.

Perhaps true, Mick, ...

But why did it give me an Error Code when I right-clicked the icon to delete
it
(e.g., file could not be found)?

Never had such kind of problems with XP.

Maybe an associated service was still running in the background, the game
was just played and was flushed out of memory properly.
