Problem copying pictures to disk

I have Windows XP. When I click "Copy all items to CD" in Picture Tasks, most
of the time a window appears telling me Windows has encountered problem when
trying to copy folder- no matter which picture folder I choose. When I click
re-try, same thing happens. This occurs erratically because sometimes it does
copy a picture file but when I click on the D drive I am unable to view the
files ready for copying. When I put in a written CD it reads O.k. I have also
recently done a system and hardware scan with Avast!v4.7 and I am virus free.
Anyone out there had similar problems or know the answer?
