Problem connecting via router

M

Mike

Greetings to all I come here as a last resort.

I am running XP Home without SP2 (although there are 4
windows patches in my add/remove programs that are
labeled as Sp2), I have a 10/100 Linksys adapter, a
WKPC54G Linksys Router, which is a Kit for notebooks, but
I have not actually gotten to the home network phase yet
because of the problem so that laptop is not presently on
the network. The router is 802.11-G. My cable modem is
a D-Link DCM-200 cable modem.

Problem:
I cannot connect to the internet once the router is
introduced. If I connect directly from modem to adapter,
connection is perfect, which is how I can communicate
here right now. I have used both the incorporated manual
and CD, and I have also used Linksys's set-up app on
their website, to hook up the router. On all instances
everything seems to go smoothly until it tries to verify
that it can get on-line once the router is configured.
It never works.

I have contacted my ISP (Cox Communications) and
Linksys. I have spent several hours with both and no one
can help. I have purchased 2 adapters, 2 routers and I
have several lines to verify that any one of the items
isn't busted. Nothing works. I have turned on and shut
off Norton Firewall and I have tried every combination of
recycling both modem and router settings. I do know that
no matter what I do the router continues to diplay an IP
address of 0.0.0.0 I know this is related to the problem
but I'm out of options on how to fix this

Any ideas, PLEASE !!!!

Mike,

You say the router displays an ip address of "0.0.0.0". Are you referring to
the WAN address?

This sounds like the cable modem is not recognising the router when it connects.

Were Cox TS unable to help you register the router with the cable modem? Many
cable broadband services register the MAC address of the device attached to the
cable modem, in a (stupid) effort to prevent connection of different devices (ie
routers). The MAC address of the computer ("connect directly from modem to
adapter") is probably registered. I'm curious why Cox TS couldn't help you with
such a simple problem though.

You have two possibilities:
1) Most Linksys routers (Linksi?) will do MAC spoofing. Set it up to spoof the
original adapter MAC address.
2) Force the modem to recognise the router.
- Power the modem, router, and pc's off.
- Leave everything off 10 - 15 minutes.
- Power on the modem.
- After 5 minutes, power on the router.
- After a minute or so, power on the pc's.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

There seems to be more than one issue.
1. The modem to 10/100 adapter works ok.
2. The same computer with the wireless adapter to the router and then to
the modem does not work.
Can you see the router with a ping or with the wireless utility?
First, I'd try to get the laptop to work with the router using the 10/100
adapter, assuming that the router has client side Ethernet connectors as
well as wireless connectivity. .
You should be able to talk to the router directly with the IE brouser, using
the address liste in the instructions that came with the router..

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wlan is a forum that may be of some help

Some things to remember.
The router may need to have the external MAC address set to the same address
as the 10/100 NIC that was provisioned (setup) by COX. This is the address
reported via the modem to COX when the computer is connected to the modem
via the 10/100 NIC.
Cox assigns the external TCPIP address to the modem and the router will
assign an address to the PC connected via the 10/100 NIC, or you may have
set a fixed LANB address for the 10/100 NIC in the PC.

Such things as Zone alarm can get in the middle of things and prevent
connections.

Can you ping the router when you are connected to it?

Shut down the modem for one minute. Start the modem with the router
powered down. When the modem is finished its boot, power up the router,
then the computers. Does this help? If not, is the modem connected to
the WAN port of the router- it is usually offset from the switched
ports. Also, the router should be set up for DHCP on the WAN side.

I have tried the power down many times by myself and with
the ISP and people from Linksys. I have powered down the
modem and router, turning on the modem first and then the
router and I have also tried the reverse.

The router actually has an internet port on the back side
to make sure the cables are going in the right place.
The LED is lit throughout every procedure.

DHCP is also set everywhere it can possibly be set

I think my long post may have been a little confusing,
sorry. I can connect directly by using just my wired
adapter to my cable modem. I do not have a wireless
adapter at all. When I follow any and all procedured to
hook up the router, (wired adapter to router port and
router internet port to cable modem ethernet port)

This is where things get wierd, I can ping the router
with 4 sent/received and 0 lost. But I can't ping the
web if the router is connected. Also, the router never
assigns itself a valid IP address (0.0.0.0). The MAC
Address matched that of my adapter abd have tries
resetting the router and cloning the address again and
even though everything goes smoothly on the configuration
end, the IP address at the router remains 0.0.0.0

The people at linksys were baffled after 2 hours and
suggested trying a new router. Guess what...same
results!!!

In addition to Jack's MAC address cloning suggestion, try the Cox forum
on http://www.broadbandreports.com for other arcane requirements that
Cox might impose.

the router continues to diplay an IP
address of 0.0.0.0

Mike,

wrong newsgroup. This is probably a question of proper router
configuration or of a proper connection to the modem.

It also helps if you don't say, the router has this IP address
or the computer has this IP address, because the router has to
have at least two IP addresses, one for each network port, so it
is useful to know which of these you mean. The same holds for
computers.
