Problem caused while changing monitor resolution

I'm trying to help a friend sort out a problem with her new computer system
(a HP computer running XP). She tried to change the screen resolution to a
higher res, but the monitor could not support the new settings and the screen
went blank. However it did not revert to the original settings after a short
while as I thought it usually did, and now whenever the computer is turned on
she gets the error message "520-single monitor configuration error". I
expected to be able to boot in safe mode and change the settings back but the
error pops up before I can do this. Can anybody shed any light on this, the
only other thing I can think of is to reinstall XP. Please help!
