problem and question: connection but no data received

how can a network show a connection, signal strength very good or
excellent, and it is capable of transferring at 54megabytes a second
but yet my computer only sends bites in single units, and it recieves
less. after 10 minutes of trying to open a page- any page, it says
bites received 12, and bites sent 33. I tried to keep reloading and
restoring the connection. the connection at the coffeeshop dies. It
bothers me when that happens. How specifically does it happen? The
signal comes to the business either through a satellite or a landline,
and supposing there is a connection working here, the next point is it
goes to some kind of router and broadcaster?? There could be a failure
receiving the signal in the router and thus no transfering of
information from my computer to the world.. or could be a problem
broadcasting data?

I just realized something- my computer is a broadcasting station of
it's own, it has to be. My computer is working here now so it must not
be the fault of my system. What specifically has to happen for a
business's "wifi" to fail? I don't like suddenly not being able to
communitate and navigate!

when was "wifi" invented, and what are the other opportunities? I like
to be up on my technology, as technology is a great form of leverage
and a tool. could someone have been downloading a large size file that
is 50 megabites? why does it show a connection? There has to be a
cause, either of hardware fidelity or software programming. It has to
be one of the two.

Also, if my computer and all computers in the local network can
broadcast and receive, therefore two computers can broadcast and
receive from each other, right? And if so, do they necessarily require
a wifi network and router and broadcaster? Or do they just require the
right configuration. Computers are boring and interesting. They are
something that is interesting only because they have to be, for
success. So I am trying to understand. I am a businessman, not a
technician. the theory and the reason of why something goes wrong-
there has to be a reason. it not only happens at this one shop, it
happens at several. another place it could happen is at the wifi
station not related to the business or my computer. techonlogy is hard
to master. it was all designed to serve us and make our lives more
convenient. How would one rate it on this front, in this regard? Anyway
that is the point of technology. is it doing it's job? is it doing it's
job as good as our political administration is doing it's job (said
sardonically). don't over-extend yourself technologically.. but keep
growing and reinvesting in better and better.
