For some reason, on one of my w2k desktops I cannot add new fonts - even when
logged in as admin. In the control panel, fonts option, I do not get the
'install new fonts' menu option? Any ideas why this one machine is doing
this or what setting I need to cahnge to make the 'install new fonts'
reappear.

Thanks,
MTish

Try the Help menu and look at Fonts, adding..
See if the menu comes up from there.
Locate the new font in the tree and it should work.
If not, you can use the Windows Explorer to drag the new font into the fonts folder
located under WINNT

Sorry, but neither suggestions worked. I was able to manually move the font
files in to the windows font folder however they are still not recognized via
word, wordpad, excel, etc...

bummer...

try
Start
Run...
"type" SFC /SCANNOW /QUIET <enter>

If you're not positive you don't have a bug try this link to run an online scan...
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
Look under Virus Definitions and do the virus scan
If you should come up with something positive, go to google and type in the bugs
name, go to Symantec or Trend Micro site, get a guide to the cure and do all it says
in that order to rid yourself. If you don't find anything, do this.

Upgrade Install
Probably would be good to do an Inplace Upgrade. Here are links I have.
(Repair Install)

How to Perform an Inplace Upgrade:

What this does and does not effect:

How to expand the Boot Partition while performing and Inplace Upgrade:

Must have Administrator Privileges

After you are through with the Inplace, you will need to reinstall SP4 and
go here to look at all of the Updates after SP4 and only use the ones you
need, like the Security Updates and then if you use foreign languages, you
could install those, but if you don't use any foreign languages, don't
install them. Those just allow foreign hackers to use your updates.

Anyway here is SP4 location(you can d/l the network version, if you may need
to do it again ( won't have to spend the d/l time after (save it in your My
Documents folders, if you choose to do it this way.

SP4

Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/

You can also use the standard Windows Update to look at any updates that you
may miss.

Here is another handy Utility Called Belarc Advisor. www.belarc.com d/l and
install it to get your CD Key Code, all your hardware, all your software,
and much more and it is not invasive at all. and the best part, it is free
for now only for private use.

Hope this doesn't look overwhelming. It is really good information and
straight to the point.

good computing,
:o)

The Word and Excel didn't bother me as much as Wordpad, which is installed with the
OS.
You might try to reinstall the Office pack.
Or uninstall and reinstall it.

I believe he said that was unavailable. The fix for this is relatively easy. You go to the fonts folder in C:\WINNT and
change the Read only attribute to Read Only. Do that twice if Read only is already selected. Just leave it as Read-only
when you finish. You will see Insatll font.. again in the applet in the Control Panel.

Nah, he said it was not in the "In the control panel, fonts option, I do
not get the 'install new fonts' menu option?" This can happen but it is
still available under "File" of the Font Folder itself.

So you are saying the client may see install New fonts... off the file menu in Windows Explorer when they navigate to the
fonts folder and not have that available in the Control Panel applet?

Never heard of that. But OK. The issue is still the Read only attribute and the desktop.ini in there.
